iittala "Taika" Salad Plate, White Pattern. Design: Klaus Haapaniemi
In iittala's "Taika" dinnerware (2007), illustrator and designer Klaus Haapaniemi successfully merged unrestrained imagination, folklore and modern clean design. Taika means magic in Finnish. Haapaniemi chose mythological creatures in the shape of two surreal owls and a hybrid of a fox and a peacock as main characters in a meticulously detailed enchanted forest setting. Various pieces use these characters differently, and this salad plate is decorated with a mythological figure that seems to have a peacock front and the back of a fox, complete with a long tail. The designs are beautifully set off against either a deep blue or an off white background. Taika dinnerware can easily be combined with iittala's solid color Teema dinnerware. White Teema and a combination of blue and white Taika look fantastic on the dinner table! Just blue, or just white Taika, or a mix of the two colors also looks terrific! Freezer, microwave, oven and dishwasher safe. H 0.5 in, Diam 8.75 in (12 mm, 222 mm). Pattern design: Klaus Haapaniemi. Form design: Heikki Orvola, 2007, Finland.
